Defensive Driving Course
The State of Texas offers the course as an option for keeping the ticket off your driving record. Electing a drivers safety course (DSC) can keep the points off your license to avoid the costly surcharges. The court may also require a copy of your driving record.

In the State of Texas, driving is considered a privilege that must be earned. You can lose your driving privileges for a number of infractions and matters as varied as failure to pay child support, addiction to drugs or alcohol, failure to pay traffic violation fines, and even racing on the highway.

TEXAS POINT SYSTEM

Points are assessed to moving violation convictions. Once the conviction has been added to the driver record, points will be assigned and will remain on the driver record for a period of three years. Click on the topics below to view the details.

POINTS AND SURCHARGES

  Traffic Violations, Points Assessed & Annual Surcharges   Habitual Traffic Violations  
  2 Points for a moving violation conviction   The DPS shall suspend your license upon conviction of:  
  3 Points for a moving violation conviction that resulted in a crash     4 or more convictions within 12 months  
  A surcharge of $100 is imposed for the first 6 points and $25 for each additional point.   7 or more convictions within 24 months  

DRIVERS SAFETY COURSE

If you receive a ticket for a non-criminal moving violation, and you do not hold a commercial driver license, you may elect to attend a Driving Safety Course in lieu of points on your driving record. In some cases, you may choose to attend a driving safety course to receive insurance discounts. You may only make this election once every 12 months and a plea of guilty or no contest must be entered with the court.
